Citizenship debate: Maltese people must not be punished

Arnold Cassola

In view of this afternoon's debate on citizenship in the European Parliament, Prof. Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, said: "Prime Minister Muscat's scheme is insensitive and offensive to human dignity since it distinguishes between rich foreigners who are considered to be of 'high value, talented and high calibre' whilst the average Maltese who earns 15000 euros a year is not deemed so.

This notwithstanding, Alternattiva Demokratika augur that the references to Malta in the voted resolution are removed. The Maltese people must not be punished because of the insensitivity and incompetence of their Prime Minister."

In vista tad-dibattitu dwar iċ-ċittadinanza fil-Parlament Ewropew illum, iċ-Chairperson ta' Alternattiva Demokratika, il-Prof. Arnold Cassola, qal: "L-iskema tal-Prim Ministru Muscat hija insensittiva u offensiva għad-dinjita' umana billi tiddistingwi bejn barranin sinjuruni li huma ikkonsidrati 'ta' valur għoli, ta' talent u ta' kalibru għoliħ waqt li l-Malti medju li jaqla' 15,000 ewro fis-sena mhux meqjus hekk.

Madanakollu, Alternattiva Demokratika tawgura li r-referenzi specifiċi ghal Malta jitneħħew mir-riżoluzzjoni kif ivvutata. Il-poplu Malti ma jistħoqqlux ikun ikkastigat minħabba l-insensittivita' u l-inkompetenza tal-Prim Ministru tiegħu."
