Arnold Cassola
Chairperson

Arnold Cassola
Arnold Cassola is Professor of Maltese and Comparative Literature at the University of Malta. He has also taught at the Universities of Catania (1981-1983) and Roma "La Sapienza" (1983-1988). He co-founded Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party in 1989 and was elected Secretary General of the European Green Party in Brussels (1999-2006) and Member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies (2006-2008). He is the author of scores of academic publications and books on Maltese language, literature, culture and history as well as on green politics. His latest books are Lost Maltese Newspapers of the 19th Century (2011), Malta- People, Toponymy, Language (4th century B.C. - 1600) (2011) and Malta e Pachino - una storia in comune (2014).
Carmel Cacopardo
Deputy Chairperson

Cacopardo 1Carmel Cacopardo graduated as an architect and civil engineer at the University of Malta. Holds postgraduate qualifications in sustainability and environmental management from Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment of the UK. Has worked in both the public and the private sector. Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of Malta. Author of the book ‘Time for Radical Change – The Introduction of Eco-Taxation in Malta’. Married to Miriam. Father of Martina and Dario. He is currently Deputy Chairman of AD.
Ralph Cassar
Secretary General

Ralph CassarRalph Cassar has been active in various roles with the Green Party since 1992. He is currently the party’s Secretary General. As a student he was active as a students’ council member in Sixth Form. Ralph  is currently serving a fourth term as local councillor in Ħ’Attard. Amongst his priorities as a councillor are improving the recyclables collection scheme, educational, cultural and sports activities, planting of indigenous trees, the defence of open spaces and the introduction of green technology in the locality. He has worked in the manufacturing industry for ten years in various roles related to quality and product development. He has also taught chemistry in secondary schools and worked in regulatory affairs on medical products with a public agency. He holds a BSc in chemistry with computer studies, a Masters in Management (MBA) from the University of Malta, and an MSc in Science from the Open University (UK). Ralph Cassar is a lecturer at the Institute of Applied Sciences at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology.
Simon Galea
Treasurer

Simon GaleaSimon Galea works as a Customs Officer at the Malta Customs Department where he occupied the role of green leader for a number of years. Main interests include animal welfare, organic farming and bird watching. Married to Gerlie Selis and the proud father of four year old Elena.
Dr Claire Azzopardi Lane
International Secretary

ClaireClaire L. Azzopardi Lane has been working with people with physical and learning disability for the past fifteen years. She has read for an MSc with the University of Manchester and for a Ph.D. at the University of Kent. Both degrees deal with Learning Disability. Her recent areas of research are issues related to sexuality and people with learning disability. Apart from her professional and academic life, Claire is also a devoted animal lover and an endurance sports competitor.
Luke Caruana
Public Relations Officer

Luke CaruanaLuke Caruana graduated as a Graphical Communication Designer at the MCAST Institute of Art & Design and is the co-founder of a graphic design studio established in Valletta, Malta. He has been active with AD since redesigning the Party’s emblem in 2011 and was involved in the visual media of the 2013 General Election and 2014 MEP Election campaigns.
Mario Mallia

Mario Mallia DSC_5917Mario Mallia graduated BEd(Hons) and MEd and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Administration and Management and a Diploma in Environmental Science. He is currently Head of School at St Albert the Great College with responsibilities for both the Primary and the Secondary Sectors. Elected as teacher and parent representative on a number of school councils. Active for many years in a number of NGOs. Occupied the post of secretary general and deputy chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika. An elected member of the Birkirkara Local Council 2003-2006 on behalf of Alternattiva Demokratika. Co-founder of Union Haddiema Hwienet. Elected representative on the University Students’ Council (KSU) for a number of years, serving as vice-president. Was responsible for editorial commentaries on national radios. Contributor to a number of publications in the educational and political sphere. Member of the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality and member on the Foundation of Educational Services (FES) board since 2009. Mario is married to Josephine and has a son Samuel
Marc'Andrea Cassar

Marc Andrea CassarMarc’Andrea Cassar is a student at the University of Malta reading for a BSc in Earth Systems Environmental Planning and Management. He had been attracted to green politics ever since he was a teenager and eventually joined ADZ in 2012. At present he is the chairperson of ADZ. As a young person he believes that young people need to be put at the forefront of society. He enjoys spending his time volunteering with ADZ, watching documentaries on science and politics, playing football, as well as hanging out with his friends.
