New spring hunting times add insult to injury

Following the announcement of the spring hunting season, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party reaffirmed its position against spring hunting. "Although shooting of birds during the breeding season is totally unacceptable for obvious conservation reasons, consecutive governments in Malta have approved the killing of turtle doves and quails whose numbers are on the decline. Furthermore, year after year protected birds, mainly birds of prey, are killed as a result of  the spring hunting season. It is offensive, to say the least, towards the general public to be deprived from enjoying nature. To add insult to injury, this year the massacre of more birds, including endangered ones, will even be carried out on Sundays and public holidays," said Simon Galea, spokesperson for Animal Rights and Agriculture.

"Alternattiva Demokrattika reaffirms its commitment towards nature conservation and the right of the public to enjoy nature. Whilst AD together with a number of NGOs have embarked on a spring hunting referendum process, both PL and PN have preferred pandering to hunters' sadistic interests. AD will never give up this struggle both at national level and at EU level particularly if elected following next May's EU parliament elections until such time that spring hunting is struck off Malta’s legislation once and for all,' concluded Carmel Cacopardo, Deputy Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika.

Wara li ġie mħabbar l-istaġun tal-kaċċa fir-rebbiegħa, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party sostniet il-pożizzjoni tagħha kontra l-kaċċa fir-rebbiegħa. "Għalkemm l-isparar fuq l-għasafar waqt l-istaġun meta l-għasafar ikunu qegħdin jgħammru huwa kompletament inaċċettabbli għal raġunijiet ovvji ta' konservazzjoni, gvern wara ieħor f'Malta approva l-qtil tas-summien u tal-gamiem li n-numru tagħhom qed jonqos. Barra minn hekk, sena wara sena, għasafar protetti, l-aktar għasafar tal-priża, jiġu maqtula b'riżultat tal-istaġun tal-kaċċa fir-rebbiegħa. Hija offiża, jekk xejn aktar, lejn il-pubbliku ġenerali li jiġi mċaħħad milli jgawdi n-natura. Biex tkompli titgħarraq is-sitwazzjoni, din is-sena il-massakru ta' aktar għasafar, inkluż dawk li qegħdin fil-periklu ta' estinzjoni, se jkun jista' jsir ukoll fil-Ħdud u l-festi pubbliċi,", qal Simon Galea, kelliem ta' AD għad-drittijiet tal-annimali u l-agrikoltura.

"Alternattiva Demokrattika ittenni l-impenn tagħha lejn il-ħarsien tan-natura u d-dritt tal-pubbliku li jgawdi n-natura. Filwaqt li AD flimkien ma numru ta' NGOs bdew proċess biex isir referendum dwar il-kaċċa fir-rebbiegħa, kemm il-PL kif ukoll il-PN ippreferew jaġevolaw il-kaċċaturi u l-interessi sadistiċi tagħhom. AD mhux se taqta' qalbha milli tiġġieled din il-ġlieda kemm fuq livell nazzjonali kif ukoll Ewropew, speċjalment jekk tkun eletta fil-parlament Ewropew f'Mejju li ġej, sakemm il-kaċċa fir-rebbiegħa titneħħa darba għal dejjem mil-liġi Maltija," ikkonkluda Carmel Cacopardo, Deputat Chairperson ta' AD.
